Claude Autant-Lara

Claude Autant-Lara (Luzarches, Val-d’Oise, 1901 – August 5 Antibes, Alpes-maritimes, 5 February 2000), was a film director, French and later Deputy to the European Parliament.

Son of an architect, Édouard Autant and Louise Lara, actress of the comédie française, Claude Autant-Lara was educated at the Lycée Janson Sailly and Mill Hill School in London during the exile of his mother by pacifist. He soon discovered the cinema, a revelation, and early career began working as art director and designer of costume; best known in this regard was possibly Nana (1926) silent film directed by Jean Renoir. Autant-Lara also appeared in the film.

As director, made quite a few provocative, films to assert that “If a movie has no poison, worthless”. In the 1960s, he turned his back to the French New wave movement, and since then had no success.

June 18, 1989, controversially, jumped again to light when he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the National front and oldest Member of the Assembly. In his inaugural in July was a scandal expressing “concern about the threat of America”, which led to a strike by most members.

From an interview with the Globe magazine in September 1989, which referred to the Nazi gas chambers as a “string of lies”, the Minister of Justice Pierre arpaillange did prosecute on ‘ racial insults, racial slurs and incitement to racial hatred ‘. Autant-Lara was acquitted, but the magnitude of the scandal provoked by his comments led him to resign his position as member of Parliament. By the members of the Academy of fine arts, of which he was a life Vice President, voted in favour of banning you occupy their seats then.

His memoirs, anger in the heart (rage dans le cœur), appeared in 1984.
