Once you have a list of people who you want to contact, the next step is, well, to contact them. How do you go about this? It’s not like this information is publicly available on the internet, right? Oh wait… yes, yes it is available on the internet. This is where it becomes a good time to invest in an IMDBPro account if you care about selling your script.

For those of you who might not know what that is, IMDBPro is a database that you pay a yearly membership fee to gain access to. I know, I know – it seems like a lot of money up front – but as far as an investment in your career, the money is well worth it. You’ll have access to the e-mails and (office) phone numbers of a lot of major writers, directors, and producers, and more importantly, their agents are listed on their as well. Once you have access to their agent, the degrees of separation between you and the people you want to work with (and can help with selling your script) become considerably smaller.

In the event that the cost of membership is too much for you though, we have you covered. Try to find out the email structure of the agency that you are trying to contact, which is actually a lot simpler than it sounds. All you have to do is Google around with the name of the agency until you find the email of someone connected with the agency, and at that point, you can figure out quite a bit from there. Once you know what the company’s email handle is, you can start doing further research and e-mailing around until you find whoever it is that you’re looking for to help with selling your script.

In short, in order to build up your database of potential industry players, you’re going to have to do some legwork – there’s no way around that. The good news is that it is entirely possible to keep an eye on the trends of the industry and possibly cast the next big actor in your film. Networking and having an excellent screenplay filled with amazing and strong characters that A-list actors will want to play will be integral to your success. Rewriting your screenplay multiple times and having a professional screenwriter help in this process is also key.
