Antonio momplet was a screenwriter and film director who was born in Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain in 1899, had a long professional career in his country, Argentina and Mexico and died in Cadaqués, Girona, Catalonia, Spain, on 10 August 1974. His full name was Antonio Momplet war.

Early film

Antonio Momplet studied in Barcelona where he worked as journalist, representative of artists, translator and adapter of dialogues of foreign films and director of theatrical performances. In 1927 he took up residence in Paris, France and worked there for Gaumont Studios and collaborated in 1931 with the Maison de danses film director Maurice tourneur. In the early 1930s he founded the magazine Film Art, which gave prestige as a critic and theorist of cinema.

First films in Spain

In 1935 he directed his first movie in Spain, the film men against men, a pacifist film unusual for the time, the First world war which collate footage, which was praised by critics.

Film entertainment

A society that Union Film producer even intended to raise own studies, disappeared soon after being born, and its director general Antonio Lasierra proposed produce on its own the entertainment film with the direction of Antonio Momplet. It is the only film in which participated the great singer Marcos Redondo which was located a copy in the Filmoteca de la generalitat. Music is Martinez Valls and Luna, among others, and it was thought during the Republic as a platform for popular music Spanish being regarded as the first musical in the history of Spanish cinema. The film narrates the vicissitudes of a humble company of zarzuela as village tour in town and just triumphing with Marcos Redondo galán.

Filming began in the “studies Orphea Film” Barcelona in November de1935, but after a few days ran out of money and the team dispersed. Momplet, however, persisted with the project, looking for other financing channels and trying to shoot what could and could where. It brought together the actors first studies Cinearte (Madrid), and a few months later, again in Barcelona, taking advantage of the call that the film had the millions who directed based on the eponymous play by Enrique suárez deza. He then went to Mexico in 1944 wrote in collaboration the indent of the Black Corsair according to Emilio salgari who would then direct Chano Urueta and wrote and directed the Amok, according to the story of the same name by stefan zweig starring Maria Felix, Julian Soler and Stella Inda novel. Vertigo (1946), A media luz trail without guilt (1946) and Bel Ami or the good young man (1946), which was selected as a candidate for Ariel of 1948, in the categories best picture and best direction would come later. He also wrote scripts for which died of love on the eponymous story of théophile Gautier, directed by Miguel morayta in 1945, women all over the play of the same name from Robert thoeren which was based on the novel the Lady of the camellias by Alexandre Dumas (son) directed by Julio Bracho in 1946 and tears of blood, directed by Joaquín pardavé the same year, among others.

In 1946 he returned to Buenos Aires and directed La cumparsita (1947), the other and I (1947), I do not chose my life (1949), Toscanito and the detectives (1950) and coffee singer (1951).

Return to Spain

In 1952 was the direction of Spain movies with the daughter of the sea (1952), version of the play of Ángel Guimerá, followed by the North wind (1954) directed by Enrique Álvarez Diosdado who won best actor in e.g. 1954 San Sebastian International Film Festival, Cain’s (1959) and Julia and the Coelacanth (1961), entreotras. In 1964 he directed El terrible Sheriff and wrote the argument Jandro, directed by Julio Coll, retiring here and going to reside in Cadaques, where he died on August 10, 1974.
