Kathryn Bigelow (San Carlos, California, November 27, 1951) is a film director, screenwriter and American producer. Especially known for such films as Near Dark, Point Break, and the winner of six Oscar, The Hurt Locker. Is the first woman in history to win an Academy Award for best director and the prize for best director (“Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing-Feature Film”) United States Directors Guild; both by The Hurt Locker.

Work as a filmmaker

Born in San Carlos, California, the daughter of an officer of a company of paintings and a librarian. Studied at Columbia University, began his artistic career as a painter, and some of his works are exposed in the Whitney Museum in New York. It is a member of the radical group Art and Language and edits Semiotext(e) theoretical magazine. It is also official police to devote to the cinema.

Kathryn Bigelow is regarded as an atypical Director, because their topics of interest belong to action, cinema either warlike, futuristic, thriller and even of terror. His films have not always had criticism welcome.

Bigelow gained recognition in 1987 with the film of terror Near Dark (The traveler of the night). Then in 1991 directed Point Break (called Le Bodhi) starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, with whom he has both public and critical success.

Between 1995 and 2002, Kathryn Bigelow performs three movies: strange days, the weight of the water and K-19, which leads to some of the most important of Hollywood as Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Juliette Lewis, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes actors.

She was married to James Cameron from 1989 until 1991, and with him formed artistic couple in several films.

Won Academy Award for Best Director in 2010 by The Hurt Locker, being the first woman to win in this genre. The film also took an Oscar as best foreign film.
