Biography

Born in Copenhagen (Denmark) on 30 April 1956. Danish director Lars von Trier is world-renowned for his critical view of the world expressed through his dramatic films which both provoked outcry from experts as also reviews by filming methods.

Lars von Trier was one of the creators of the Dogme 95 film movement which is called the return of more credible stories in the film industry away from special effects and mainly heading towards a minimum technical use.

His first film as film school graduate was forbrydelsens element (the element of the crime). In spite of achieving greater recognition with films like Europe (Zentropa) von Trier enshrined as one of most important film directors in Europe in 1996 with breaking the waves.

This latest production with “dancer In the dark” (which has holdings of Icelandic singer Björk, the French actress catherine deneuve, and the Swedish Peter Stormare) as “idiots” or “Dogma # 2” the trilogy of “The Golden hearts”. Now Von Trier is preparing a new trilogy in United States, whose first delivery corresponds to “Dogville” (2003), where he appeared Australian actress nicole kidman. The second part, entitled “Manderlay”, was released February 2006 in Spain.

Lars von Trier also paints pictures, one of which is on display at the top floor of the castle of April (Denmark). It reflects a universe almost monochromatic and agonizing in his films.

Children and interest in film

Communist parents and nudists, von Trier was raised in an atmosphere of thought left and film lovers. At the age of 11 he had his first, a Super 8 camera filming his friends in home-made productions and entered the Copenhagen film school in the 1980s. In 1981 and 1982 he won several awards at the Munich Film Festival for his student films.

In 1983, after having graduate had his debut film: the element of crime (1984), with this film managed to draw attention in the Cannes Film Festival where he received an award for technical achievement.

Von Trier added “Von” to his name when Professor Gert Fredholm surprised him with other colleagues of course in the Assembly room at night, and reminded them that it was time to close; the students responded blowing him to let him out of. Insults, the teacher responded by saying; “you are worse than Sealand ninat,” referring to the children of the Burghers of Copenhagen. And just after incited them put a von ahead of your last name, so that everyone would recognize them. This, his companions he hearkened not, but for Lars, have something in common with Erich von Stroheim or Josef von Sternberg he appealed, which led him to add his name really.

Lars von Trier continued his European trilogy followed by the Epidemic film in 1987. Epidemic was a director – played by himself – trying to raise money for a film within a film about a virus that decimating Germany.

After Medea for Danish television in 1988, von Trier ended his European trilogy with Europe in 1991. a black comedy in the post-war period of the Second World War in Germany. Europe got the attention of their audience with the use of overlays, rear projection, and dramatic changes between scenes in black and white and color. Renamed Zentropa for the U.S., Europe version von Trier was able to film appreciation. Disillusioned by his third place at the Cannes Festival, von Trier accepted the award thanks to the “dwarf” Roman Polanski jury Chair.

Lars von Trier continued to experiment with vision film on a filming project called dimension, which will be filmed in three-minute segments for thirty years. The results of this film are still to be seen.

Revolted against his past upon learning of his father, on the death of his mother and the fact that her father not mattered you about von Trier, of convert to Catholicism, von Trier ended his perfectionism characterised European trilogy. Wanting to achieve an honesty he admired the iconoclastic work of Carl theodor dreyer with its self-imposed artistic chastity. He was became co-author of Dogma 95 with dane Thomas vinterberg launching a collective called which calls the return of more credible stories in the film industry moving away from the special effects and mainly heading towards a minimum technical use.

For this reason his films are ruts with camera shoulder – only occasionally with a still camera. One of the key features of films is using natural lighting and editing type is unexpected scenes and shots cut in the middle of the dialogue of the characters that do not fit with the times by giving them a documentary or informal look to create greater realism, especially in critical moments of films), look for critique, can consider it as sloppy or as a method of abbreviation.

In June 1989 Lars von Trier was described himself in an interview as A melancholy Dane masturbating in the dark before the images of the film industry. While von Trier was looking for an audience wider English-speaking films achieved success resurrection of Scandinavian cinema.

Danish television

Lars von Trier has also directed series for Danish television: the kingdom (Riget) and the kingdom ii (a couple of miniseries about a haunted hospital shot in 16 mm). ernst-Hugo jaregard 1998 death prevented that von Trier conducted the third version of The Kingdom. A revival led by author stephen King series von Trier titled Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital-based and could be taken to screen by the American chain ABC.

Recognition of criticism for their dramatic views

For his film Breaking the Waves, it was about the sacrifice of a woman and her sexual martyrdom, stood out with the participation of cinematographer robby müller and the emergence of new actress Emily watson who played a strong role and simple character, received the special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Breaking the Waves was segmented in colored chapters made by painter pers kirkeby. Emily Watson, also received a nomination for the Academy Award for best actress.

After the success achieved by the celebration of Vinterberg von Trier submitted their own work of Dogma film the idiots that von Trier was able to draw attention to refuse to cut a sequence of naked for an orgy scene limited only to cover the genitals with black bars in 1998, movie shot in digital video. In 1999 von Trier was offended when producers artificially enhanced colors to launch video, something that went against the Dogme 95 movement.

In 1999, having been Executive producer of a novel for television called Denmark Morten Korch von Trier embarked for the realization of a drama-musical; and in 2000 she made dancer In the dark, film which received the Palme d’Or at Cannes for best picture and best actress for the singer Icelandic Björk who played the role of Selma, an immigrant Czech that I was being blind.

In addition, “I ve seen it all” was nominated for an Oscar for best song in 2001.

With Dancer in the Dark, von Trier started fixing America, taking this step to your new project: A trilogy complete on U.S. society. The first movie that formalized this trilogy was Dogville, submitted in 2003, and attended by the particularity of having been filmed entirely inside a hangar closed with just scenery, and mere marks on the floor to indicate walls and other props. In the Australian actress nicole kidman embodies the role of Grace, a woman who is escaping from a mysterious past.

In Manderlay, second part of the trilogy, von Trier takes Grace, this time performed by the actress bryce Dallas Howard to a plantation slaves, exploited by emphasizing a few characters who suffer and are constantly humiliated by an individualistic society driven by selfishness, power, and personal interests.

At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival presents Antichrist, controversial film starring willem dafoe received harsh criticism for his sex and self-mutilation.

The last of the trilogy films America: land of opportunities will be Washington.

A peculiarity of von Trier is has aviofobia (panic to fly) and for this reason, never has exited beyond that allow highways, making difficult the occasions where your movies are in foreign territories such as the United States to do so always based thus used locations in Denmark and surroundings.
