Charles Stuart Kaufman (New York, 1 November 1958) is a screenwriter. Named as one of the 100 most powerful people in Hollywood Premiere Magazine

Biography

Kaufman was born into a family Jewish in New York city. Began his career in television writing episodes for Chris Eliott Get a Life, as well as a dozen other programs such as Ned and Stacey and The Dana Carvey Show episodes.

It was recognition by first writing Being John Malkovich, film that earned him an Academy award and Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award nomination. He also wrote Human nature, which was directed by Michel Gondry, and then worked with Spike Jonze again as a writer for the Orchid thief, which earned him another nomination for the Academy and its second BAFTA. In the movie featured a character, Charlie Kaufman, who was to be a quite unreal version of writer. In real life does not have an identical twin brother, is married and hardly could experience the fantastic drama history.

He also wrote confessions of a dangerous mind, a biographical portrait of Chuck Barris, a driver of a programme of competitions which he thought was a key man in the CIA. Directed by George Clooney, debuted as a director. Kaufman, very annoying, criticized Clooney to dramatic alterations to the screenplay for the film without even talking to him. Screenwriter said in an interview with William Arnold: ‘ as usual for a writer is delivered a script and then disappear. ” But that is not for me. I want to be involved from start to finish. ‘And these directors (Gondry, Jonze) know and respect it.

It came after eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (forget me! in Spain) and eternal glow of a mind without memories in Latin America, his second film with director Michel Gondry, which received first prize Oscar for best original screenplay, his third BAFTA and the prestigious PEN American Center 2005.

An interesting pattern in the work of Kaufman is often focus on a male protagonist rather shy, introverted, and a female dominant figure. This happens with eternal sunshine… (Joel/Clementine), the Orchid thief (Charlie), and want to be John Malkovich? (Craig/Maxine).

The film Synecdoche, New York (Synecdoche, New York) made his debut as director, in a tone which still preserving taste for unusual and black humour, shows a much more dramatic and serious in his previous scripts record first.

Lives in Pasadena, California.
