Gary Fleder (born 19 December 1962 in Norfolk, Virginia) is a director, screenwriter and film producer. His most recent work, The Express, is based on the true story of Ernie Davis (1939-1963), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy football player.

He graduated from the University of Boston and the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Fleder began his television career in 1993 with an award-winning episode of Tales from the Crypt (“Forever Ambergris”, starring Steve Buscemi and Roger Daltrey). Since then, has been conducting pilots and chapters for several television as L.A. Doctors Blind Justice, The Evidence, October Road, The Shield.

He directed “The Subway”, a chapter of Homicide: Life on the Street 1996, by which his guest, Vincent D’Onofrio, won a Peabody Award. He also collaborated with Tom Hanks for directing an episode of the award-winning From the Earth to the Moon.

Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead, his directorial debut, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995. This comedy of black humour, written by Scott Rosenberg (Fleder at Boston University fellow), became for many in the cult movie and helped revitalize the Treat Williams carrer. It was also the first work with those who would be future collaborators, such as Nelson Coates art director and composer Steve Weisberg.

Since then, Fleder has earned its reputation directing witty thrillers among those included Kiss the Girls (1997) with Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman; Don’t Say a word (2001) with Brittany Murphy and Michael Douglas; Infiltrator (2003), a science fiction thriller based on a story by Philip k. Dick, with Gary Sinise, Madeleine Stowe Vincent D’Onofrio; and Runaway Jury (2003), John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman.
