Herman Cohen (27 August 1925 – June 2, 2002) was a film producer in serie B in the 1950s, which helped popularize teenage horror titles as a cult film I Was to Teenage Werewolf.

Biography

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Cohen began his career in entertainment as porters to 12 years of age and later the Dexter Theatre Detroit usher. 18 Directed theatre. Thereafter he was Assistant Director of the Fox Theatre, a local Detroit with 5,200 localities.

After a period serving in the Marine Corps of United States, Cohen was sales director for Columbia Pictures in the area of Detroit, shedding in the 1940s to Hollywood to work in the Columbia advertising department.

In the 1950s began producing films, initially working as an Assistant production Jack Broder and Realart Pictures Inc. in films as bride of the Gorilla, Chief Pontiac of Battles (with Lon Chaney, Jr.), Bela Lugosi Meets to Brooklyn Gorilla and Kid Monk Baroni (title which acted Leonard Nimoy, then with 21 years). Subsequently worked for Allied Artists and United Artists with diverse films, including Target Earth, Magnificent Roughnecks (with Mickey Rooney), and Crime of Passion (with Barbara Stanwyck and Raymond Burr).

Cohen also took part in nine films, scripts co-writing with commentary Kandel and using a pseudonym, “Ralph Thornton” or “Kenneth Langtry” for their collaborations.

Cohen achieved great success mediated 1950s with a horror for American International Pictures, film I Was to Teenage Werewolf, which wrote and produced. The film cost approximately $100,000, and grossed more than 2 million at the box office. He was the discoverer of Michael Landon, which acted in the film. After that success Cohen wrote and produced teen, horror titles were I Was Teenage Frankenstein, How to Make a Monster, and Blood of Dracula.

Cohen also appeared on an occasional basis in his own films, usually as an uncredited extra. Thus, it can be seen in How to Make a Monster, I Was to Teenage Werewolf, Konga, Black Zoo, Crooks and Coronets Trog.

During the 1960s and 1970s began producing horror films in the United Kingdom, working alongside stars as Joan Crawford (in Berserk! and Trog) or Jack Palance (in Craze). In 1961 he returned to his roots in Detroit acquiring the Fox Theatre in which he had worked in his youth. At the end of the 1970s Cohen was more dedicated screenplay and distribution to production. Cobra Media, a sales company founded in 1981.

Herman Cohen died of throat cancer in 2002 in Los Angeles, California.
