Jesús Franco way is a director of film, actor, screenwriter, composer, producer and editor born in Madrid on 12 may 1936 (Although fonts incorrectly claiming that he was born in 1930)

He is best known for his work as director. He has filmed over 200 movies and has stated he will die “with the camera on the shoulder”.[appointment required] He has worked in a variety of countries, such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, United States, etc.

Biography

Interested in music since childhood, he entered, after the Spanish Civil War at the Conservatory of Madrid, where he studied piano. He finished his studies and graduated in law, which became a Research Institute and film experiences (Faculty), where he remained two years while writing novels under the pseudonym of David Khunne. He also combined his work as director and actor of theatre during this time, devote to playing jazz at clubs in Madrid and Barcelona and, later, in France and Belgium.

He travelled to Paris, where he studied management techniques used to pass the time watching films in the film library of the University. Back to Spain he began his career as a composer for film and Assistant Director, working with conductors such as Juan Antonio bardem, León klimovsky, Luis saslavsky, Julio bracho, Fernando Soler, Joaquín Luis Romero marchent and Luis García Berlanga, among others. He also worked in agate Films S.A., as a writer and representative.

His early work as director gave fruit cultural films, usually documentaries of short duration on various items of the magnificent Spain of the past.

Soon he applied his experience and knowledge and thus made his first feature film: we have 18 years, which starred Antonio ozores and terele pávez in 1959, but it was not until 1962, with the famous screams in the night, when he achieved some success. Other films of the time include death sings a blues (1962), the hand of a dead man (1962) and Rififí in the city (1963).

Hailed by fans of the horror genre, which began to grow quite often soon became an enemy of the dictatorship. However, good criticism for his work at that time, materialized in financial support to continue with the work. Exile and continued to work abroad.

You were not producing outside Spain and not just for their incursions into horror, since he also played all kinds of genres: Comedy, drama, music… and later even porn. In 1965 he worked as a secondary unit director orson welles chimes at midnight, with whom he would repeat projects unfinished treasure island and Don Quixote. But it was in 1967 when won the public outcry at the international level with his Necronomicon film premiered at the Berlin film festival.

However, his films were not always well received by critics or the public. Indeed, much of and audience began to reject and despise his crazy ideas. Thus, focused on making movies 1 low-budget and astonishing to launch six, seven or even more titles a year, working with an infinite number of production companies in many countries, and even to create your own (Manacoa Films). This fact led him to release many of their titles under pseudonyms, “on the recommendation of the producers, to not saturate the film market,” he explains. The rationale for the use of pseudonyms really searching for a better sale of the film, sounding good in the international market and innovative sounding names. Thus, signed some of his works as David Khunne, John O’Hara, Clifford Brown, or Pablo Villa, among other names.

Franco is unable to make movies with very little money. Due to its huge production capacity, it leveraged many times sharing a shoot to embark on a new project using the same material and surplus money from the previous project. He even take advantage of the same scenes for different films.

Its most outstanding actors include Howard vernon, Antonio mayans, Christopher Lee, klaus kinski, Jack Taylor, Jean servais, Santiago Segura, Fernando fernán Gómez, Aldo sambrell and Ricardo palaces. Their muses or actresses fetish include Diana lorys, Elisa Montés, maria rohm, Soledad Miranda, Rosalba neri and Lina romay. The latter is the most representative and her current sentimental partner.

During the 80’s, many of his films were described as X by committees of censorship in various countries. Released versions of his films with a quite trimmed footage (up to 40 minutes) something that he did not understand. He replied with raids in purely pornographic film, something that many of his fans know nor understand.

At the beginning of the 90’s, Jess, as it is popularly known, he was contacted by the State society for the 1992 Seville world exhibition to gather materials and assemble the film premièred with the title of Don Quixote of Orson Welles, a film that the brilliant American director rolled for decades and left unfinished. After long time of work, and mount, you finally movie released, although it did not receive a very good reception by critics. Some of these criticisms were due, among other reasons, to the fact that Expo society failed to meet at least one third of the footage shot by Welles, by economic frictions with the heirs of the filmmaker. For example, Franco version does not have one of most famous images of the film, a sequence filmed in Mexico in which Don Quixote sees himself in a movie theater and engages with his spear against his own image, destroying the room screen.

After years in which Franco films only could be seen occasionally in Spain on video in 1996 editions debuts in film killer barbys, which coincided with a tribute in New York (where he received an award from the very same roger corman) and a general claim to his work.

Subsequently Jess production dropped considerably, although still rolling.

Apart from his work as director, he worked as an actor in many of his films, as well as in the classic Fernando fernán Gómez strange journey (1964), considered one of the best Spanish films of all time. It has most recently appeared in Pedro temboury and José Roberto Vila partners films and television series Carnival, which was the last work with script of the deceased Rafael Azcona.

In addition many of his own films, Franco produced other tapes, such as the one that led the actor Richard palaces, the acclaimed Biba band!

As a composer and musician has been responsible for the soundtracks of many of his films, as well as works by other filmmakers, comedians, Juan Antonio Bardem. There are at least two compilations on CD with some of their musical works.

In 2006 he took the collective Digital 104, Spanish who, like him, defends production in digital format to problematic celluloid. It is also the main protagonist of the film the life and Times of jess Franco (2006), by José Luis García Sánchez.

The twenty-third edition of the Goya Awards, held on 1 February 2009, the Academy of Sciences and arts AMPAS Spain handed the Goya of Honor Award for his extensive film career.[ 1 ] In addition, the General Society of authors of Spain is preparing a retrospective on his filmography.[ 2 ]
