Samuel Michael Fuller (Worcester (Massachusetts), August 12, 1912 – Hollywood (Los Angeles), October 30, 1997) was a film director.

Biography

Early years

Fuller was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin Rabinovitch (an immigrant Russia Jew) and Rebecca Baum (an immigrant Jewish Poland). Before of his birth, the family had taken the Fuller name. Age 12, he began working in areas close to journalism as a Messenger. At age 17, he became a reporter criminal in New York, working for the New York Graphic. Mid-1930s, began to write novels and screenplays. Fuller also became a ghostwriter scripts and subsequent interviews never revealed what hyphens wrote anonymously.

During the Second World War, Fuller joined United States Army infantry. He was assigned to the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Participated in Africa, Sicily, and Normandy landings. He was also in Belgium and Czechoslovakia. For its services was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and Purple heart. Fuller used his military experience as material in his films, especially in the 1980 film one red: Division of shock.

Career as a screenwriter and director

Hats Off (1936) was the first accredited indent fuller. Decided to try to be director since Robert l. Lippert him talk so write three films for your company. Fuller agreed to write if you were allowed to go free of charge. Lippert accepted and Fuller made his directorial debut in I Shot Jesse James, followed by Baron of Arizona

The third film, The Steel Helmet, made known in the cinematographic industry Fuller. It was one of the earliest films about Korea Guerra and Fuller was based on its own military experience as well as testimonies of the war veterans.

Thereafter, Fuller was wanted by the major film studios and signed a contract to perform seven films with 20th Century Fox. The first of these was Fixed Bayonets!, also based on the Korea Guerra. The seventh film, Tigrero, never filmed and was the subject of the documentary of Mika Kaurismäki Tigrero: A Film That Was Never Made.

In 1952, Fuller filmed Park Row, a history of journalist. Darryl f. Zanuck, 20th Century Fox, wanted to turn the film into a musical, but Fuller opposed the idea and started his own company in production with their profits.

In 1953, he directed Pickup on South Street. Other films that Fuller directed during the 1950s are House of Bamboo, Forty Guns and China Gate. After leaving 20th Century Fox, Fuller made Run of the Arrow, Verboten! and Merrill’s Marauders. In 1959, he led The Crimson Kimono.

Fuller’s work during the 1950s and 1960s followed a similar format: low budget and controversial subjects. Between 1967 and 1980, Fuller directed two films only: Shark! and Tatort – Tote Taube in der Beethovenstraße. In 1980, he directed one red: Division of shock, which was positively received by critics, but wasn’t successful at the box office. In 1982, filmed White Dog, although due to its controversial content was not released until 1991 studies. In 1983, Fuller moved to France. Subsequently filmed Les Voleurs de la nuit and Street of No Return. In 1990, he directed his latest film, La madonne et le dragon, in 1994, he wrote his last indent Girls in Prison.

Appearances as an actor

Fuller made a cameo in the film of Jean-Luc Godard Pierrot the insane. In The Last Movie, Dennis Hopper, played a film director and The State of Things of Wim Wenders personified a cameraman. Fuller also appeared in A Return to Salem’s lot Larry Cohen. His last job was as an actor: appeared in 1997 in The End of Violence.
